Comparing Proposals

blog proposals

When soliciting multiple proposals, be sure you are comparing apples to apples. You may think you are saving money upfront, but in reality the materials, workmanship, or warranty are coming up short in the long run.

Four (4) items to check your proposals for:

  1. Materials to be used (as required): sheeting, underlayment, metal, roofing material, vents and ridge, etc.
  2. Warranties: workmanship and material.
  3. Liability Insurance: This protects you and the contractor; and, unfortunately, it’s one of the first expenses cut by depressed and failing businesses. If you are not sure, ask for a copy of the certificate.
  4. Payment Terms: be sure you understand what you are responsible for and when.

Solar Attic Fans

solar-fan-main

One of the ways to meet “energy efficiency” requirements is to increase attic ventilation – and a solar attic fan is a great alternative to traditional methods.  Over hot summer days, the attic air can reach temperatures in the 120′s and beyond.  Your air conditioner attempts to cool the inside of your property, while the attic is simultaneously heating the ceilings of your house.

The fan is solar-powered and functions by pulling the cool, outside air into attic and displacing the hot air.  As your attic temperature drops, the house cools and your air conditioner does not overwork itself.

In addition to saving energy, many of these fans may be eligible for tax credits up to 30% of their cost!  Discuss with your CPA and learn about the tax benefits of energy efficient upgrades.

What's In Your Gutters?

blog gutters leaves-on-roof-small-Fall is here… and Winter is on its way.

Annual gutter cleaning is critical to keeping your roof waterproofed and your home water tight.

Large amounts of litter and debris fill your gutters reducing their capacity and clogging downspouts.  These obstructions will cause flooding.  As the water level rises, it backs up underneath the roof’s waterproofing underlayment.

For a more permanent solution, ask about our gutter screens.  We clean the gutters and then install heavy duty screens which shield your gutters throughout the year.  This service is slightly more expensive, but you will not have to worry about your gutters for many, many years.

Roof Tips

  • Inspect Twice a Year >

A frequent inspection is the most important preventative maintenance measure you can take to ensure your roof lasts for a long time. You should check your roof a minimum of twice a year, in early spring and late fall.

  • Stay Off the Roof >

Walking on the roof can reduce it's lifespan. If you must walk on the roof, take extreme care, wear rubber soled shoes and make sure the roof is dry.

  • Keep it Clean >

Keep your roof and gutters clear of leaves, twigs and other debris.  Debris impairs the natural drainage of water and trapped water will rot a roof faster than anything else.

  • Algae, Moss & Mildew >

In addition to looking bad, algae, moss and mildew can trap moisture and shorten the life of your roof. Soaking the affected area with a diluted chlorine bleach solution, then pressure washing can be effective in removing these damaging growths.
